The Stargate

Background

It was originally thought that the builders of the stargates were the Goa'uld. This is not correct. The original builders of the stargate network was the Ancients. They created a network of stargates to travel not only throughout this galaxy, but out into other galaxies also.

The stargate network is currently being used by many races including the Goa'uld, Tok'ra and the Tau'ri.

Description

The stargate basically consists of two large rings made of naquadah, both standing 2 stories high.

The main structure, or 'outer ring', consists of 9 chevrons, all equally spaced. The use of the 9th chevron is still widely debated. The 'inner ring' is a moveable track, engraved with 39 glyphs, each wich represents a star constellation.

Use

Stargates in the same galaxy can connect to each other by dialling 6 glyphs, and the 7th is the point of origin. If the address is valid (i.e. leads to another stargate), and artificial womhole will open between the 2 stargates.

Traveling to another galaxy other than the one in which the stargate is locted, requires the dialling of an 8th glyph. It also requires extra power be provided to the gate.

The 8 glyph addresses are much the same as the 7 glyph addresses. The first 7 glyphs represent 7 points in space and the 8th is the point of origin.

On many off-world stargates, the inner track doesnt rotate. This is most likely because of the presence of a DHD. It is believed that the rotating track may have been installed as a 'fail safe' incase the DHD was inoperable. It is also believed that the DHD's could have been a later edition to the stargates which eliminated the need for the 'inner' rotating track
